NASA's Role

NASA has been studying red light therapy for use in space since the late 1980s. Photobiomodulation shows promising results in improving neuronal function and survival in the brain, as well as activating excitatory and protective pathways in various conditions. However, the effects appear to vary depending on the patient's condition, whether they are awake or asleep. Red LED light improves sperm motility in asthenozoospermia.

This study examined the effect of photobiomodulation with LED light on sperm motility in men with asthenozoospermia, a condition in which sperm have low motility. They used different wavelengths of LED light on sperm from thirty men and found that the treatment significantly improved sperm motility and reduced the number of immobile sperm. In untreated samples, only 12% of sperm were rapidly motile, while 73% were immobile. After treatment with LED light, there were significant improvements in sperm motility.

Previously, it was thought that laser therapy was only complementary in nature and was prescribed in combination with drug therapy or in the final phase of traditional treatment [192], but further studies completely refute this view. Comparison of red light and blue light therapies for mild to moderate acne vulgaris: A randomized controlled clinical trial.

Photobiomodulation with visible red light against skin fibrosis (scars)

"Skin fibrosis, also known as skin scarring, is a global health problem estimated to affect approximately 100 million people annually. Current treatments are associated with significant side effects and even with combination therapy, progression and recurrence are common. This review focuses on the available published study on phototherapy with red light generated by light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for the treatment of skin fibrosis. A search was conducted for published literature from January 1, 2000 to the present regarding the effects of visible red light on skin fibrosis and related pathways. Our systematic search resulted in six articles regarding LED effects on skin fibrosis and dermal fibroblasts. There is growing evidence that visible LED light, especially in the red spectrum, is able to modulate important cell characteristics associated with skin fibrosis. Although there is promise in vitro data, there is a paucity of clinical trials examining the efficacy of LED-RL in the treatment of skin fibrosis, and randomized clinical trials are needed to demonstrate clinical effectiveness on different types of skin fibrosis."

In summary, this randomized controlled trial provided new evidence for the efficacy of RLRL therapy in reducing myopia progression compared to the sham device at 10% of the original power. The RRL treatment was well tolerated with no apparent side effects.
